COLOUR GRADING

A Sweet Mystery

Very contrasty grading, pushing the shadows very low. I utilized the flexibilty of S-log3 in order to delibrately lose details in the shadows to hide certain details about the location we were filming. For the first shot I needed to hide the end of the corridor behind the actor, I wanted to create the feeling of emptiness so he walks into the light from darkness. Throughout the film I gave the midtones a warmth to create a slightly sepia aged feel. Saturation was also kept low deliberately. I also had to digitally remove some distracting areas of some shots e.g. the green light on the right side of the second shot shown on this page.

Living is Easy With Eyes Closed

For this short film, I used Sony's Cine4 colour profile. It is a less extreme profile to S-log3 and is easier to expose on the go as well allowing lower ISO's (down to 200). I went for quite a saturated look. The director wantd to bring out the yellow in the actress's coat so I isolated this yellow in Resolve and increased the saturation. I also motion tracked the face in many shots to increase the sharpness and contrast on just the face to draw attention to that area.
